Divorce and the child - counselling and schoolings
1. June 2009
In 2001 5647 marriages were made and 4312 divorced. In the same year more than 3700 children remained living with just one parent. Emotions, that divorcees feel and live through often harm their as former husband and wife relations as well as relations with their children.
Children are the ones who often suffer the most for these emotions. Divorcing parents are angry at each other, tell bad things about former husband or wife in front of the child and trying to influence the child to stay with him or her. Parents may take a child as a friend, to whom they complain their problems or it may even happen that the child is being forgotten while having a divorce.
In early spring 2005 Estonian Children’s Fund started a project named „Both parents remain for a child after a divorce. A seminar-training for divorcees”. The project is meant to get rid of parents’ negative emotions that concur with ending a marriage or cohabitation and to find a balance in oneself in a way the child would not get forgotten. Work takes place in a closed group, which means, that people who start together also end together.
