The participants of Rat Race 2008 collected 206 000 crowns for charity

There were 555 office-rats participating in charity-run Rat Race and about 206 000 crowns was collected to help children from orphan's homes and special needs. Rat Race took part in foour cities in Estonia.
From the participation fees in runs in Tartu, Tallinn, Rakvere and Võru to Estonian Children's Fund was donated 120 000.- crowns, to Estonian Agrenska Foundation (in Tartu)was donated 50 000.- crowns and to South-Estonian Center of Special Needs (in Võru) was donated 30 000.- crowns, also 6000.- crowns was given to Rakvere City's Board of Disabled People. “Rat Race 2008 broke once again a record - the money collected this year is the biggest. In seven years the praticipants of Rat Race have helped charity work with 714 000 crowns,” said the president of organizing organisation JCI, mr. Margus Maksimov. “I believe the success of this race shows the development of social responsibility in our society,” added Maksimov.
“Through Estonian Children's Fund JCI supports the program of stipend that helpes those young people to continue their studies at university, who has no social network consisted of close relatives. On one hand this educational stipend helps students from children's homes financially, on the other hand it gives them a signal that the path they have chosen is right and someone cares about them," gives Tuuli Elstrok, a project manager in Estonian Children's Fund, the importance to this support. “It is good to know thata youth organization JCI values both education and charity. I hope JCI Estonia is a powerful example to others," added Elstrok.
In the frame of Rat Race also Rat Race Photo Contest took part. Best works are being presented 19.06-04.07.2008 in Viru Cetner ll floor. Awards are from Olympus, Fotograafia Arendus- ja Koolituskeskus and Fotoluks.
Rat Race is an entertaining charity event where office-workers run through the central city, wearing suits or costumes, holding their suitcases and mobile phones and running shoes. In Estonia Rat Race takes place for the seventh year. Originally this race comes from New York and it has become really popular all over the world: New York, Toronto, Sydney, Rotterdam and others.
The organiser of Rat Race is federation of young leaders and entrepreneurs - JCI Estonia which is a member of international organisation Junior Chamber International (JCI). JCI is an international non-beneficiary organisation, its members are young and active people up to 40 years. Today this organisation affiliates in more that 100 countries, its goal is to develope social responsibility and skills of leading people, supporting and starting the processes taking place in our society and developing international relatioship.
