  In my opinion the Estonian teachers' knowledge about ADHD (hyperctivity) is
  good, they know enough and know how to deal with these kids
with blanks, here and there they might need additional training

Joining support group will give you more than might expect

28. January 2008
Estonian Children's Fund has coordinated and carried through the support groups for parents, grandparents and teachers who have hyperactive children for 7 years already. What is it that brings the people to support groups and what it gives them?

Support group has spread to Estonian mainly from the United States of America, but also from the European countries where people take attention to helping themselves throught others' experiences and support.

ECF has formulated the word "support group" as opened joining with constant core for parents, where in safe environment, with the help of group leader, one can speak about his/her positive and negative emotions, support eachother and learn new pedagogical in order to cope with the child with attention deficit hyperacitivity disorder (ADHD), also concrete directions in changing the negative behaviors of the child.

Support groups' charm is that in one time, in one place there have been gathered all those with similar experiences, emotions, questions and answers. Similar experience unites, at the same time gives an opoortunity to learn from someone's mistakes, also to give advises and support. Support group gives the parents and the teachers the opportunity to meet in neutral ground (meaning not in school or at home) and explain each other their thoughts.

ECF is happy that the parents and teachers who have participated in our support groups, consider this to be a very useful and necessary opportunity to speak, to talk, to discuss with the people who share one thing - hyperactive child. They become more confident, find better solutions to different situations and get psychological support from each other.

You may participate in support group weather your child has the diagnosis or not.

This week all over Estonia there meet 4 support groups:
- Tuesday, January of 15th at 18.00, Lai 31/Suurtüki 1 Tallinn Russian-language group;
- Friday, January of 18th at 18.00, Mäe 33 Tartu support group (in Estonian) and
- Saturday, January of 19th at 11.00, Rüütli 23 Pärnu support group in Estonian language and at 12.30 at the same address Pärnu Russian-language support group.
