Tuuli Elstrok got a master's degree in social work, specializing in ADHD.

19. June 2007
Tuuli Elstrok, a project manager from Estonian Children's Fund, vindicated on the 28th of May 2007 her master's thesis "Elementary school students with the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): parents’ coping methods at home in the context of Estonian Children’s Funds’ support groups." Her work was appreciated as "A" (excellent"). In 2003 Elstrok got a bachelor's degree in social work, in Tallinn University, this year master's degree accrued.

According to various data there is about 1 to 20% of children with ADHD, accrued the children with these symptoms, but not the diagnosis. Children are very much affected about the way their parents are coping with them, what kind of strategies and coping methods they use. As a result of child maltreatment these children may end up in criminal activity, depression, social deterrence, addiction of different drugs and learned helplessness, which leads to other, more serious problems.
The goal of this MA thesis is to find out and chart the coping methods at home that parents of elementary school children (parents, who have taken part in Estonian Children’s Funds’ support groups) with the symptoms of ADHD use. In accomplishing these goals the following tasks were put up: to find out and chart the coping methods parents of children with the symptoms of attention deficit, hyperactivity disorder and the combined disorder use at home.

The subject of this survey was questionary enquiry (wholly 19) and thematic interviews via telephone (wholly 11), carried on among the parents who have taken part in Estonian Children’s Funds’ support groups’ activities.

According to the research the basic coping methods in educating children with ADHD symptoms at home are consistent assertion of requirements, continuous repeating of instructions, exemplification and adjustment. Also, ignoring unwanted behaviour and leading the child to another activity to pacify child’s fit of anger, in order to return to preliminary activity afterwards.

The graduation of Tuuli Elstrok will be on the 21st of June at 15 o'clock in Tallinn University.
