  In my opinion the Estonian teachers' knowledge about ADHD (hyperctivity) is
  good, they know enough and know how to deal with these kids
with blanks, here and there they might need additional training
inadequate, they definately need additional training

"Pathfinders" on new paths

28. September 2006
A project "Pathfinders" (started first in 1998) begins again this autumn, this time a little bit renewed.

Project is aimed at children with diagnosis and/or symptoms and behavioral patterns of ADHD (Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) from Sikupilli High School, who study from 6. to 8. grade. The children are directed to this project by their teachers.

The main goal of the project is to teach children different social and educational skills so they can cope as well as possible with their lives. Different methods are used: alternately visits, discussions, social theatres, group activities, role plays etc.

Pupils and instructors meet twice a month from September 2006 to May 2007.

Basic principles used in these activities are:
- find opportunities for the child to show his/her abilities;
- the more there are experiences of success, the less there are troubles;
- criticize actions, not the child;
- hohour the questions, ideas and support him/her to act, study and learn.

Project instructors are Tuuli Elstrok from Estonian Children's Fund and volunteers Marit Lepik, Patrik Rand, Keimo Kägu, Maria Hõbesalu, Eva Edovald and Helena Vänt.
